Steve Charles - Qualitative Risk Management
Steve Charles has over thirty-five years of banking and investment decision-making experience, in which…. he has structured, restructured, assessed and passed judgment on literally thousands of lease, lending and equity investment transactions, both domestically and internationally.   This broad experience provides Steve with the ability to quickly analyze, evaluate and determine the best course of action for a broad array of debt or equity investment decisions.
Most recently Steve has been acting as special investment advisor to family offices, private funds and diversified hedge funds.  In this capacity, he has applied this significant experience in investment problem solving to helping establish processes and disciplines for the deployment of capital into alternative asset strategies and to preserving and salvaging value in existing problem investment portfolios.

For six years prior to this, Steve acted as Chief Risk Officer and Chair of the Investment Committee for GE Equity, with primary responsibility for due diligence sufficiency, investment standards compliance and portfolio diversification. During this period, GE Equity reviewed more than four thousand transactions, building a $5 billion investment portfolio, covering a wide range of business stages and industry sectors, located across the globe.   In 1996, Steve had been recruited to GE Capital’s corporate staff as a Senior Risk Manager, where his responsibilities focused on the improving of investment and credit review processes within several GE Capital divisions, including Real Estate, Commercial Finance, Asset Management, Asia and GE Equity.

In 1992 Steve was hired by Shawmut Bank to effectively build its national credit business.  Shawmut, reeling from real estate related loan losses in the early 1990’s, was desperate to reload and diversify it asset holdings away from an existing concentration in New England.  After implementing a program of bulk asset sales, Steve, completely changed the underwriting and approval process and built a new more diversified national credit book, including cable, cellular, health care investments, and reconstituted the Bank’s venture capital investment program. The result was a highly profitable multi billion-dollar book, which greatly assisted in the Bank’s recovery.

Steve began his financial services career as a lending officer with Continental Bank, managing international and corporate banking.  In this position Steve covered many industries included oil and gas, mining, forest products and heavy equipment from posting in the US and Canada. He was directly involved in a number of restructuring transactions, both domestically and internationally. Continental and the FDIC instituted one of the first examples of a “Good Bank/Bad Bank” strategy. In 1986, Steve took responsibility for the FDIC’s $1 billion international portion of the $5 billion total workout portfolio and was a voting member of the Executive Committee approving all settlements.  In 1989, Steve became a Senior Credit Officer at Mellon Bank where his responsibilities included project finance, steel, media and communications, energy and Chief Investment Officer of Mellon Leasing Co. (trains, boats and planes).
